The Hearth Fire

Community Council for Uncertain Times

Background

What is Council?

Council is an opportunity to gather in circle to bear witness and share authentically. People speak one at a time, sharing from their heart and listening fully while others speak. Often prompts are offered to provide a theme or topic to engage with. Learn more in the book, The Way of Council by Jack Zimmerman and Virginia Coyle.

What are the origins of Council?

Council draws upon ancient practices and wisdom traditions developed over thousands of years throughout many different cultures such as: Ho’oponopono (Hawaiian), Veche (Slavic), Satsang (Hindu), and Devout Listening Circles (Quaker). The term Council means “a gathering of the people” and was coined by early European settlers in Turtle Island (North America) after witnessing the Talking Circles of the Haudenosaunee Peoples.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have my video on the entire time?

It is not mandatory but preferred to keep your video on to help us feel as though we are gathered in circle with one another. You’re welcome to take breaks as needed.

Can I join with a partner or friend?

Yes, this is very much encouraged. However, please register separately and if possible, use your own device.

What if I don’t want to share, can I still participate?

Definitely! Listening and bearing witness are important parts of Council. You are welcome to join with no expectation or pressure to speak and will still benefit from being there.

Many thanks!

*With gratitude to the Coast Salish Peoples who have lived since time immemorial in sacred reciprocity with the lands where this work takes place. May we work together toward a process of decolonization.
